Respect the artist, buy the music!
A graphic which seems to sum up many of the problems the Music Industry (and artists) are facing. Not that it's framed as an appeal to artists, rather than as an appeal to support record companies.

Making Cents
An excellent article on the economics of streaming from Damon Krukowski of Galaxie 500 http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/8993-the-cloud/
"Galaxie 500's 'Tugboat' was played 7,800 times on Pandora in the first quarter of 2012, for which its three songwriters were paid a collective total of 21 cents, or seven cents each."

New Strategies
The following two links are examples of new strategies taken up by the Music Industry in an attempt to increase sales. The first shows how the industry has worked with it's traditional products - the physical artefact - and attempts to make it more attractive: Why Katy Perry's new album actually stinks
The second shows how the industry is attempting to expand into completely new markets that are still attractive to the music consumer: HMV booms as fans go Gaga for headphones
You should have notes on both articles and be able to explain how they show changes to the industry.

Lesson 3 - What do record labels do?
Both of the following articles are useful reading and contain examples of music industry practice that can be used as case studies. The first is a discussion of a band called Boxer Rebellion who made a deal with HMV despite staying unsigned: Who Needs Major Labels Anyway?. The second contains some useful information on digital service provider, Turnpoint, whose software is making it easier for musicians to sell and market direct to fans: Online tools helps bands do business
